Meet Christina M. Jenkins -the Inventor of the Sew In Weave Technique

The hair and fashion industry can boast of several innovators, including Madame C.J. Walker, among others. Christina M. Jenkins is one of those great minds who is largely credited for creating the hair weaving process. Christina Mae Thomas was born Christmas Day in 1920, although there are conflicting dates regarding her day of birth. She was born in Louisiana but details of her early life are scarce. What is known is that she graduated from Leland College near Baton Rouge with a degree in science in 1943. Jenkins started work at a wig manufacturer in Chicago and in 1949, she began working on a technique to make a more secure fitting wig. She then moved to Malvern, Ohio and began studying how sewing in commercial hair with a person’s natural hair added length and body. Thus in 1951, Jenkins filed a patent for her “HairWeev” technique, which was granted in 1952. I don't know about you, but when I heard that at one point in time there was a actual Black Wall Street, I was completely floored. How amazing was it to know that there were an estimated 600 businesses, 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores, 2 movie theaters, 6 private airplanes, a hospital, bank, post office, schools, libraries, law office, and bus system! Sony’s TriStar Pictures has won the worldwide rights to the psychological thriller “ A White Lie ,” produced by and starring Zendaya as the first African-American woman to graduate from Vassar College. The project is based on Karin Tanabe’s novel “The Gilded Years.” Hello Sunshine’s Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter will produce the project with Zendaya . Monica Beletsky (“Fargo,” “The Leftovers”) is writing the script. “The Gilded Years” told the true story of Anita Hemmings, a light-skinned, African-American woman who was the descendant of slaves and passed as white so she could attend Vassar during the 1890s. She’s pulled into the elite world, where she’s treated as a wealthy, educated white woman who finds romance with a moneyed Harvard student.
